Water plays a dominant role in the architectural and landscape design of this project. Through a marshy landscape with ponds, a footpath leads to the entrance of the building where the ponds continue into the two atriums (including the entrance hall). The ponds form part of a water circuit for rain, “black water” (wastewater containing faecal matter), “grey water” (wastewater generated from domestic activities such as laundry) and a separate “yellow water” circuit. These ponds also play an important role in the cooling and heating of the building, the ionisation of air in the atriums and the presence of plants enable the conversion of carbon dioxide into oxygen. This way the atriums function as the lungs of the institute, which contributes to a healthy work environment for employees whose offices and laboratories are situated within the atriums.0 }, ^0 e& \% T$ }" {
